Job done, and that was fun. It turned into a race real quick! No one wanted to take the lead on the way out, so we ended up jogging. Soooo slow. I felt so relaxed and was making jokes with Dougy (3:40 1500m now hyrox) about being at 140bpm. Then a young buck (1:51 800m) said you guys can lead if it's that slow, and Dougy replied we did for 20 years, it's your turn now!
The pace was slowing alot, but knew this was a race and not a TT, which I felt like those race instincts would kick in. Hit the turn and stepped on it straight away. Sensed I had opened up a gap on the other 6 and just kept into it. Felt super controlled until about the 12 minute mark, and then told myself just keep the pressure on until the final corner and the job will be done.
Last 300m around the corner was bad, and I never got the momentum back in the final straight. Seemed I had won by a bit, but the lads had closed hard and got within 5 seconds at the end, so i'm glad I held on.
2:54/km for 2.3km winning move, including 65 sec 400m to get the gap and mile at 2:51/km.
Tasmanian Open State Championship #32. Didn't think I would add to that tally! Most of the top guys do the 10k or Half Mara here, so obviously not my best title, but can only beat who shows up!
