When recovery is the focus it's really important to listen to your body. Add in the current heatwave and that becomes even more crucial.
This session was actually meant to be completed yesterday but when I went out at 7.30am (a) my legs felt like I'd done a gym session in the middle of the night and (b) it was already HOT. So I made the surprisingly mature decision (see, I'm growing) to do a 2 hour spin and focus on recovery. For the rest of the day I made sure my carb intake was good and in the evening I did a stretching/foam rolling session which identified the fact that my quads were insanely tight.
This morning I got up even earlier and headed out just before 7am to try again. Yes, the powers were a touch down on where they should have really been but given that 24 hours ago I couldn't complete any intervals, today was a big win. It shows me that underneath the fatigue I know I'm carrying, the power is there. I have a massage scheduled this afternoon and another next week; all the focus is currently on optimising my recovery.
Given that I've been telling the athletes I coach to moderate power targets/expectations this week, I just about managed to take my own advice today 😉
